An Underground Storage Tank (UST) system is a tank, or combination of tanks, the volume of which is 10 percent or more beneath the surface of the ground. Over time, USTs may corrode, leaking contents into the surrounding soil and groundwater. If anyone suspects that a release has occurred from a UST, they should call the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) at 800-782-7860 within 24 hours of the suspected release.
